Un sourire de Case-Pilote, 2018 - 2021.
As a return to the source of identity, this work takes root in Martinique, the native island of my late maternal grandfather. A character with a complex personal and family history, whom I have rarely had the opportunity to meet. This quest comes when I experience motherhood. It is therefore a question of the family through the West Indian society, which interests me by its insular character, its history marked by the traumatic foundations of the colonial society, its beliefs, as well as the cross-breeding, claimed in the French West Indies as cultural identity.

Comme un retour à la source de l’identité, ce travail prend racine en Martinique, l’île natale de mon défunt grand-père. Personnage à l’histoire personnelle et familiale complexe, que j’ai rarement eu l’occasion de rencontrer. Cette quête intervient au moment où je fais l’expérience de la maternité. En partant d’une histoire individuelle, celle de ma famille, j’ai rencontré la culture créole. Son identité a été marquée par les fondements traumatiques de la société coloniale, mais aussi réunie par le métissage, revendiqué aux Antilles comme identité culturelle.
Une partie de ce travail a été rendu possible grâce à Création en cours, programme national de résidences piloté depuis 2016 par les Ateliers Médicis avec le soutien du Ministère de la Culture et en coopération avec le Ministère de l’Education Nationale, de la Jeunesse et des Sports.

Marie Mons spent three winter months in a small village in the eastern fjords of Iceland, where she became Aurore. She embodied her character allowing surprise to play a large part, evoking the winter, its polar nights and the rhythm that it induces through a great shamanic ritual resembling a monodrama. For this mysterious fairytale to become real, the inhabitants of Seyðisfjörður became the actors in this experimental theatre, reflecting her invented or real mental projections.

Marie Mons a passé trois mois d’hiver dans un petit village des fjords de l’est de Islande où elle est devenue Aurore Colbert. Parlant de l’hiver et ses nuits polaires, du rythme qu’il induit au travers d’un grand rituel chamanique, elle incarne son personnage en laissant toujours la part belle à la surprise. À la manière d’un monodrame, les habitants de Seyðisfjörður sont devenus les acteurs de ce théâtre d’expérimentation, traduisant ainsi ses projections mentales, inventées ou réelles.

In this video, Marie Mons depicts her own birth in the North Sea. taking inspiration form Nordic mythology and the Icelandic fascination with the "spirits of nature", Marie Mons depicts the sacred element of water to trace a path back to the source of her own identity. In a kind of mystical odyssey, she explores the wild landscapes in which she performs.
Naked and walking in the waters of a lake surrounded by mountains, this introspective performance allows her to enact her own cleansing rebirth. In this way, she reveals her new beginning.

En s’inspirant de la mythologie nordique et de la fascination des islandais pour les "esprits de la nature", Marie Mons filme l’aspect sacré de l’eau pour revenir à la source de son identité. Dans une démarche d’odyssée mystique, elle part à la recherche de paysages vierges dans lesquels elle performe.
Nue et marchant dans les eaux d’un lac entouré de montagnes cette performance introspective lui permet de renaitre purifiée. Elle révèle ainsi sa propre aurore.

Particularly attached to discerning and capturing what escapes the senses, throughout the course of various artistic residencies I have been to places that enable me to escape from everyday reality: the mystical mountain range of Montserrat in Catalonia or a monastery on a Norwegian island. Combining self-portraits, portraits, still life and landscape views, I have sought to create a world apart, bringing out the sacred in everyday life as so many expressions of wonderment. Such places are especially conducive to deep and undivided introspection. In Montserrat, a rising force seems to come from the mountain, and this was to inspire the title of this series.
Particulièrement attachée à discerner et capter ce qui échappe aux sens, je me suis rendue au fil de résidences, dans des lieux qui me permettent de m’extraire du réel : le massif montagneux mystique de Montserrat en Catalogne ou encore un monastère dans une île en Norvège. En mêlant autoportraits, portraits et paysages, je m’attache à faire naître un monde à part, à faire ressortir le sacré dans la vie de tous les jours comme autant de manifestations du merveilleux. Une expérience immersive et introspective s’impose à moi dans ces lieux. À Montserrat, une force naissante semble provenir de la montagne, elle inspirera le nom de cette série.
